THE FIRST & ONLY SYNTHETIC PHONICS READING PROGRAMME IN MALAYSIA... since 2001
Readeasy Phonics is written based on synthetic phonics. Synthetic phonics is a method of teaching reading which first teaches the smallest speech sounds and then builds up to blending these sounds together to achieve full pronunciation of whole words.
There are 44 speech sounds in English. In Readeasy Beginners Level, 24 sounds(Consonant & short vowel sounds) are taught & children are trained to blend 2 and 3- sound words like on & cat (Books 1 - 6). Then children are trained to blend 4-sound words with consonant clusters at the end like mist(Book 7). Finally, they are trained to blend 4-sound words with consonant clusters at the beginning like drum(Book 8).
There are also some 'sightwords' in Readeasy which are blue in colour. But they are not many. I've chosen common everyday words to be included in the reading texts. The 'sightwords' in Readeasy are either words with very irregular spellings or words where certain phonic rules have not been taught yet. Do NOT teach children to blend these words.
In Readeasy Intermediate Level(Books 1 & 2), 10 new sounds are taught with 14 spelling alternatives. Diagraphs & long vowel sounds are introduced at this level.
A word of caution, English is not an easy language. Sometimes a speech sound can be represented by more than 1 symbol/letter(s). For example, the sound /k/ can be represented by 'c' or 'k' or 'ck'. In Readeasy Beginners Level, we will introduce the most common symbol for the sound /k/ which is 'c'. We will teach the symbol 'k' in Book 7 and 'ck' in Readeasy Intermediate Level.
When my husband and I wrote Readeasy, our goal was not only to teach small children to read fluently but also for them to become expert spellers & writers. So we were very careful not to introduce everything too quickly.
What is great about Readeasy is that we have included a lot of reading texts after introducing new sounds and word blends. This will help the children to really understand the spelling system and also to help them become fluent. It is NOT enough to teach them BLENDING only.
And did I tell you that the whole set only cost RM39.90 inclusive of 8 books, a VCD teaching guide, 91 picture names(in the VCD with correct pronunciation) & a set of sound cards which are useful for hands-on blending? It's really OUTRAGEOUS, value for money!
